Document your property before the storm
The best claim documentation is created before any damage happens. Each season, photograph and video your home inside and out, keep a current contents inventory, and store it in the cloud. A clear "before" makes the "after" impossible to dispute.
Know your policy and deductibles
Read your policy every year. Confirm your coverage limits, your separate hurricane deductible, whether you carry flood coverage (most homeowner policies exclude flood), and any sublimits. Surprises after a storm are expensive.
Harden the property
Shutters, impact windows, roof tie-downs, and clearing loose debris reduce damage and can reduce premiums. They also demonstrate that you took reasonable steps to protect the property.
Have a claim plan ready
Know how you will document damage, who you will call, and where your policy and inventory live. If a storm does hit, act fast on safe emergency repairs, document before cleanup, and get an independent scope of the loss before accepting any settlement.
